The numbers glowing purple on his clock taunted him, as if to remind him how awful his sleep schedule was. Though sleep was the last thing he had in mind. In almost every one of their missions, Donnie’s tech would act up and constantly mess with nearby signals for seemingly no reason. After hours of research, he found what had been screwing it up, and he yearned to get his three fingered hands on it; An unknown power source strong enough to reach his machinery from miles away, how could he not take advantage of this?
And after a while of coaxing Raph into coming along with him, along with several near close encounters with the public eye, they tracked it down and found a flat, crimson piece of metal in an old alleyway. But it was worth every close call they had, because the thing washuge.
Upon inspection, the metal was one that the Kraang had dropped after what they so nicely called “The Takeover”. It was heavy, sure, but it also had some sort of energy that couldn’t be explained. So, he brought it back to study, despite all of Leo’s comments.
It was about his size in height, Raph’s size in width, and after many, many tests, was also strong enough to withstand almost everything that would normally break or dent it. Fire, acid, a bomb,(or two), several weapons to the front and sides, and even their mystic magic. Perfect for both defense and offense in combat, if he could use it correctly.
But it also made it harder to work with, showing it had been seven hours of just cutting it into manageable sizes. No wonder the Kraang was so hard to fight. His eyes were slowly getting heavier, head lulling back and forth in the office chair. Every part of him was on auto pilot, the same sawing motion being burned into his arms. It was almost second nature at this point, and all that rang through his head was;God, I need better tools.The sound of metal and power saws that rang throughout the room was the only thing he could hear, the only thing he wanted to hear. He was interrupted by knocking on the door, a voice on the other side calling for him.
He didn’t get what he wanted as much as he would like apparently.
“Hey Donnie, can I come in?” Raph.
“Yeah sure, just don’t touch anything.”
The door creaks open, shutting behind Raphael as he walked into the busy garage. The smell of iron was strong, accompanied by the large mugs of coffee that stood on a bedside stand nearby. The only light was the bright computer that sat next to the grey, dull metal part, the screen filled with Donnie’s notes. Raph walked closer to Donnie’s chair, noticing the lack of a reaction besides continuing to saw the metal, only stopping when it snapped in half and shut off, leaving a newly frustrated Donnie to grumble angrily at the sight.
“Hey, Don, did you get any sleep?” he asked, though he already knew the answer, with how drowsy he was acting.
“...Stupid saw,oh, uh, yeah, I slept like... a day ago, I’ll be fine.” He muttered, not looking away from his broken saw.
“A day ago - Donnie!” Raph whisper-yelled, louder than he intended to.
“What? At least I slept a little.” he said, pulling off his goggles to finally look at his taller brother. “Besides, I have a lot of work to do, and I need all the time I can get to catch up.” Said Donnie, turning his chair and finally looking up at his taller brother. “Now, if you’ll excuse me-” As he got up to grab another saw, his legs gave out under him and he collapsed, hands and knees on the floor, too exhausted to try and stand again.
“Donnie!” Raph crouched down to check on his younger brother, readjusting him so that he was sitting with his shell to the wall, looking for any injuries or scrapes, which there were none. A wave of relief washed over the taller brother. As he sat on the cold ground, Donnie felt his body being picked up and swung onto Raph’s shoulder, who was now leaving the room and headed towards the door. He tried to protest, but his entire body gave into exhaustion the moment he tried to lift an arm. All that came out of his mouth was a long groan.
“Raph, put - put me down...”
“You just fell on the floor Don; I’m not letting you work anymore. Besides, a little break won't hurt ya’.” A frustrated but weak hiss was all he gave before giving in to the sleep he was missing. Raph felt Donnie’s breathing become slower, resting into the crook of his neck as he drifted off to sleep. Honestly, why were his brothers so bad at taking care of themselves? Leo had insomnia and refused to say anything if he was hurt or sick, Donnie pulled the same shit practically every week, claiming that he'd be fine just before crashing and almost endangering himself with the several sharp objects scattered all over his desk. And Mikey was always doing something highly dangerous, leading to several broken bones for Leo to patch up.
Passing through the kitchen, Raph caught sight of Leo sitting on a chair, arms on the counter with a Jupiter Jim comic in his hands. Next to him, a small candle was lit, illuminating the area just enough to let Leo read without any problems. Why he didn’t just turn on the kitchen light, Raph didn’t know. He adjusted the soft shell on his shoulder and walked towards the counter.
“Leo?”
His head turned towards the larger figure in the room, slowly processing what he saw before realizing who it was. He put down the comic book and straightened his back on the chair, looking at both his brothers with a tired smile.
“How come your up? Normally it’s me and Donnie who stay up this long.” Leo said, gesturing at his sleeping twin brother with the now rolled-up comic.
“Couldn’t sleep, plus Donnie here was overworking himself again.” He said, shrugging the shoulder that his brother was on, making him mutter in his sleep. “Besides, you need sleep too Leo.” Raph said. Leo simply scoffed and rolled his eyes before protesting.
“I do not. I could totally go without sleep, no problemo.”
“Leo.”
“Raphael.” He said in a joking tone.
“Go to sleep.”
Leo looked away, side eyeing the wall as if ignoring the demand to sleep would work. Raphael just sighed before grabbing his purple brother off his shoulders and holding him like a baby. Raph softly grabbed Leo’s arm and pulled him towards the living room, making him sit on the couch.
“Wha-”
“I need you to watch Don for a while, so he won’t wake up and try to overwork himself again.” Raph said, carefully placing Donnie next to his twin. In an instant, his arms found their way to Leo’s body, wrapping around his waist in a tight hug. He had always been a hugger when he was asleep, though he’d never admit it.
“Why can’t you watch him?” Leo asked, pulling Donnie into a side hug.
“Because I've got to turn off all his tech, so unless you want something to blow up, stay here.” Raph said before walking away. Leo looked at Raph, then Donnie, and gave a shrug.
“Eh, fair enough.” Leo said, tightening his hold on his brother once he started sliding out of his arms. He lifted off the purple mask and set it aside, causing Donatello to squirm before readjusting, ending up on top of his blue masked brother and trapping him on the couch, plastron to plastron. Well now I'm stuck, he thought. Leo felt his eyes become heavier as he rubbed his brother's shell, chuurs coming from both turtles as they relaxed into each other's arms. It would be fine if he closed his eyes for just a little while. Just a while...
Raphael, after turning off any dangerous machines (All of them), came back to the couch to see both brothers fast asleep, tight grips from both. If they were glued together, he would be none the wiser. Raph didn’t feel like walking back to his room, so he just sat on the floor in front of them both and waited for sleep to overtake him.
But as the three were fast asleep, content with themselves, the mystic metal, as Donnie so called it, was glowing. It vibrated and lit up the dark, purple room it lay in, attracting signals that were beyond reach. Beyond the earth, their earth.

“Come on Donnie, I don’t see anything you might want here, let's just leave.”
“I'm looking for something specific, Leo. There was a strong signal coming from over here and I want to see what it is, it might be useful. And don’t start complaining, you chose to come with me!” Donnie said, running into a pile of cans that blocked his way and knocking them over.
“Yeah, might. And I only came so you wouldn’t get captured or hurt, we both know how reckless you are on your own.” Leo scolded. Donatello simply scoffed in return.
“I can take care of myself, thank you very much. “
“Sure.”
They continued with their lookout, Donnie Jumping ahead and pointing a tracker towards the building tops, Leo trailing behind with a bored expression. Jumping from place to place was no longer entertaining to him, just a necessary task to keep up with his brother. Traffic could be heard from the farther roads, honking and shouting from every car unfortunate enough to be in the crowd. Must be another car crash like last time, typical. He would have scoffed; had he not been jumping buildings.
The beeping from Donnie’s device sped up, making both turtles stop in their tracks. He waved it in different directions before stopping at the trigger point. A pile of boxes stood on the roof as they approached the source. Lifting the boxes and moving them aside, placing them in a line to check them. As they opened the boxes one by one, they eventually found a piece of metal. It was dull and crimson in color, but it seemed to glow in an unsettling way. Like at any point it would come to life and try to bite them.
“This is what you’ve been chasing? It looks like scrap.” Leo said, unimpressed by their findings.
“Apparently? It looks like something from Baxter Stockman’s robots. Maybe it has a radio in it or something, because I don’t see anything interesting about it.” Donnie said, lifting the metal out of the wooden box. It was cold to the touch.
“Whatever it is, let's just take it home already, I'm tired.” Whined Leo.
“For once, I agree.”

“What’s this supposed to be?” Raph said, poking the metal with his foot.
“We don’t know either, but it kept messing with my stuff, so I assume it does something.” The purple brother crouched at the metal part, observing it for anything weird or uncanny. Nothing showed up.
Mikey walks up to the scrap and crouches down with his brother, looking at it before knocking on the top of the smooth surface. As if responding, the metal starts buzzing and glowing a deep orange-red color that scares both turtles away. Weapons are drawn and pointed at the light, everyone standing from a distance.
“What did you do Mikey!?” Leo shouted.
“I didn’t do anything!” Mikey responded.
“Metal doesn't do that!” Shouted Donatello.
“Ya’ think!?” Raph shouted back.
And as suddenly as it had happened, the metal stopped glowing, the vibrating died off. It went back to the same boring, dull metal that they found it as. Still keeping their distance, they lowered their weapons and stared at it, expecting something else to happen. A transformation, a summoning, maybe it would blow up. Nope, nothing happened. Whether they should be relieved or suspicious, they didn’t know. Everything was silent up until Raph spoke.
“...What just happened?”
“That I would also like to know. Donatello?” A voice said from behind them all. The turtles turned to see their father, Splinter, looking at the purple brother with half amusement, half disappointment on his face. All eyes were looking at Donnie, who was nervously fidgeting with his hands.
“Well?”
“I uh, may have gone out on the surface to find something that I wanted to see, and I found this thing in a crate, and it may or may not be some possibly dangerous Kraang technology.” He blurted out in a quick sentence, barely taking a single breath between words. Leo looked away from the scene, hoping Splinter wouldn’t notice. He did though.
“I warned you not to go on the surface Donatello, you know better. I assume Leo went along too?”
“Uhm-”
“Yes, Sensei.” Leo said quietly, surprising them both. The other two brothers just stood by, confused and concerned. No one said anything until Splinter approached the purple turtle and lifted off his mask, revealing a purple glowing scar just under his eye. As if a root was growing out and spreading everywhere. The pupil looked dilated and red.
“Dude, your eye...” Mikey said,
“Donatello, did you encounter any villains during your search?”
“No, we didn’t even see anyone on the way there, or back.” He replied, sounding confused. There was no response as the rat took off the mask fully and stared in concern, scanning the glowing scar that was now growing.
It’s growing.
Why is it growing?
The confusion and panic of the room grew, but the purple masked turtle could only focus on the blurring and pain growing in his eye. His head hurt, and he felt unconsciousness creeping into his body and weakening him from head to toe.
“Sensei...?” a strained cry was all the turtle could manage to say before he fell to the floor and lost consciousness.
